Countertop RO dispenser review
Waterdrop A1 Review
A plug-in countertop RO that dispenses both hot and cold water from the same unit. IAPMO-listed under NSF/ANSI 58 for TDS reduction, with dual UV and six temperature presets. The hot-water function is the reason to buy it — and the manual-fill tank is the reason some people will not.

The Waterdrop A1 is a countertop reverse-osmosis dispenser aimed at renters and anyone who wants filtered hot water without plumbing. You fill a 1.06-gallon feed tank by hand, the unit pushes water through a 7-stage RO and dual-UV setup, and it holds purified water in a 204-ounce internal tank ready to dispense at six temperatures.
Its IAPMO listing is specific: NSF/ANSI 58 for TDS reduction at a certified 87 GPD, and NSF/ANSI 372 for lead-free construction. That means the primary certified claim is dissolved-solids reduction, not the 84-contaminant list the AquaTru carries. Waterdrop’s own manual restricts the unit to municipal tap water within published limits — TDS under 500 ppm, pH 6.5–8.5, turbidity under 1.0 NTU — and explicitly says not to use it with private well water.

What we liked
Hot water from a countertop RO is genuinely rare. Most countertop RO systems dispense room-temperature or cold water only. The A1 produces hot water in about three seconds, which makes it useful for tea, coffee, instant noodles, and baby formula without a separate kettle.
The certification is real, even if it is narrow. IAPMO R&T is a legitimate third-party certifier, and the listing is live in its directory. NSF/ANSI 58 covers TDS reduction, which is the core RO claim. The unit also carries NSF/ANSI 372 for lead-free materials.
No plumbing, no drain connection, no installation. You fill it by hand and empty the waste tank by hand. For a rental or an office where you cannot modify plumbing, that is the whole point.
What we did not like
Manual filling and draining is a chore. The feed tank is 1.06 gallons and the waste tank is 0.48 gallons. You will refill and empty it more often than you expect, especially if you use the hot-water function regularly.
The certified claim is TDS only. Unlike the AquaTru’s five-standard, 84-contaminant listing, the A1’s certification is specifically NSF/ANSI 58 for TDS reduction. If you need certified PFAS or fluoride removal, this is not the system for that.
It draws up to 1,700 W and needs a nearby outlet. There is no battery or manual mode. If your kitchen lacks an open counter outlet, plan for an extension cord.
Waterdrop A1 vs AquaTru Classic
| Waterdrop A1 | AquaTru Classic | |
|---|---|---|
| Hot water | Yes, 6 presets | No |
| Certification | IAPMO: NSF 58 (TDS) & 372 | IAPMO: 5 standards, 84 contaminants |
| Feed / drain | Manual fill and empty | Manual fill and empty |
| Tank size | 204 oz purified | 0.75 gal purified |
| Upfront price | ~$509 (MSRP $649) | ~$475 |
| Filter cost | CF $39.99 / RO $69.99 | ~$85–$140 / year |
Choose the A1 if hot water matters more than the widest contaminant certification. Choose the AquaTru Classic if you need certified PFAS, fluoride, and lead removal and can live without a hot-water function.
Who should buy it
Buy the Waterdrop A1 if: you rent, you want hot filtered water without a kettle, your water is municipally treated and within the published feed limits, and you do not mind hand-filling and hand-draining.
Skip it if: you are on well water, you need certified removal of PFAS or fluoride specifically, or you want a larger tank that needs less frequent attention.
Verdict
A niche product done well. The hot-water function is the reason to choose it, and the manual-fill design is the trade-off. If you want certified broad-spectrum removal, the AquaTru is the better tool; if you want instant hot filtered water without plumbing, the A1 is the one.
